Reading in transition

Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung

The influence of digitisation on children's and youth literature

Current studies show that reading literacy among children and young people is declining - and this in times when there is an unprecedented supply of literature for this target group, both analogue and digital. More people read than ever before. But often not books, but short messages and picture messages on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.

Studies have shown that purely digital reading does not promote the development of vocabulary, on the contrary. What effects does the digitalisation of children's and young people's everyday life have on their reading behaviour? How does writing and language competence change? And what does this mean for authors?

Reading is undergoing change. The Academy for Politics and Current Affairs of the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the International Youth Library Foundation are jointly addressing this social, educational and cultural development and shedding light on this change in reading in a series of events.

We cordially invite you to our kick-off event "The influence of digitisation on children's and youth literature".
