NotenTexte. Oh, my everything! The lives of Robert and Clara Schumann - A Musical-Literary Evening
“You are my everything!” wrote the 21-year-old piano prodigy Clara Wieck to the 30-year-old music journalist and composer Robert Schumann shortly before their wedding. They had to fight for years in order to be allowed to get married, and now they could finally live together. Schumann composed as if under a spell, incessantly and with newfound confidence, while Clara, a pianist celebrated throughout Europe, took care of the household, earned money with concert tours, and performed Robert’s music that no one really wanted to hear. Along the way, she gave birth to seven children. A husband in the shadow of a successful wife: typical problems of a difficult marriage. But Robert and Clara stuck together, even when Robert fell ill and died in a mental asylum at the age of 46. After his death, Clara contributed more than anyone else to the dissemination of his works and to his fame as a composer. Robert and Clara Schumann: a great love story that is tragic, exemplary, poignant, and modern.
