"Die Kinderbuchbrücke" - A Bridge of Children's Books
In 1945, the Jewish journalist Jella Lepman returned from exile in England to the land of the perpetrators to open up the world to German children with books. Against much resistance and under the most difficult conditions, she organized an exhibition of international children's and young people's books in Munich's Haus der Kunst. This was a complete success. Only a few years later, she succeeded in setting up a youth library in Munich, where she collected thousands of books from all over the world and set up countless activities for children and young people. She achieved all of this with assertiveness, renowned comrades-in-arms and in part in an extremely unconventional way.
Full of humor and free of self-pity, Jella Lepman describes in "The Children's Book Bridge" how, in a male-dominated environment, as a militant woman convinced of her idea, she created an institution that became a worldwide role model. The new edition is the long overdue rediscovery of her memories of the establishment of the International Youth Library. An exciting document of post-war history, vividly and grippingly told like an adventure novel.
The publisher Antje Kunstmann and the International Youth Library cordially invite you to the presentation of the new edition of Jella Lepman's "Die Kinderbuchbrücke".
Event will be held in German.
